There is a growing need among consumers to know the origins of a product, so the producer has to meet this need. The main difficulty is in identifying the characteristic which shows the product can be traced from the raw materials right through to the finished product.
In 2003, Stefano Mancinelli decided to use the services of the medical laboratory,Bioaesis, who specialise in DNA research, to analyse and certify scientifically that his wine derives exclusively from the grape variety Lacrima. DNA is the invisible barcode that identifies without a doubt the identity of a product.
The system was successfully applied to samples from his 2003 vintage of Lacrima di Morro d’Alba, and it was shown through genetic profiling that this wine is indeed derived from grapes of that variety.
